New Kicks

After a 40 minute swim (ahem 40 laps...well technically 20 laps because I learned that one lap is equal to both to and from the sides of the pool) and some upper body lifting (chest and back) I was spent. I can really tell that I work alot harder swimming then I do when I am on the elliptical or stationary bike. Anyways, my Mom came over to visit this afternoon and we went out and ran and few errands, one of those was breaking down and getting new shoes. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE getting new shoes, but paying the price for them is always a bummer. I headed over to Peak Performance in Omaha. This store specializes in running. I was very lucky, the salesman I was working with happened to be a cross country coach for our university here in Omaha and also has his degree in Personal Training. I milked this for what it was worth and through about a 100 questions his way about my foot (since I am trying to wait it out to go to the doctor). He took a good look at my foot and said no swelling/bruising so most likely from the pain that I am describing I might have strained my Achilles tendon a little and also may have a case of plantar. Now, this is not 100% accurate, but I had pretty much figured this due to the pain in the upper heel and also along the arch of my foot. He assured me to go ahead and swim and even bike!! He said the blood flow can help the injury and when I am biking I am not putting much pressure on it. Also, he said that I want to somewhat try to do some stretches/exercises with it so my foot is not so weak when I start trying to run again.
I purchased a pair of Asics Gel-the ones below (I am too lazy to upload the photo I took on my camera lol). I am not sure of the specific name for them, but they have extra heel and arch support which is what I need. He also recommended that besides icing for the tendon 3-4 times a day, to always walk around in shoes in my apartment...really??? I will do what I can take. Luckily today the pain is probably about a 3 with a 10 being the worse. So not bad at all, but I am giving 2 full weeks before I start the running again! Especially since I am going back to work next week, the last thing I need is to have major foot issues when I am on my feet all day teaching.

New shoes lately...please share?

  1. My boyfriend has had achilles tendon issues and it is definitely smart to rest it and nurture it from the beginning...because it can get bad, he had to deal with is for like 7 months. But he didn't go to a doctor or do any exercises/stretches, so I think his could have healed way more quickly than it did. I'm bet you're fine, it's just a matter of a little rest!

Swimming is tough, nice work on all those laps!!

  2. I am obsessed with the Asics Gel Nimbus runners... literally on my 6th pair in a row, haha.

I LOVED your comment about vodka + grape koolaid + sunkist. That sounds so artificial and purple and DELICIOUS, all at the same time! :-)

  4. New shoes are the best! I need new ones like crazy right now. Runnersworld.com has this super awesome shoe guide that I used to figure out which shoe I might want to buy. I'd say it was pretty accurate too because it gave me the shoe that I currently wear, Brooks Ghost!

  5. yay- I love finding new blogs :). Awesome job on the swimming! I love buying new running shoes, but also hate HATE how much I have to pay for them! I wore Asics Gel Nimbus but recently switched to Saucony Kinvara. However, now I have a femoral neck stress fracture, so I think I need to go back to the better cushioning of the Asics!

  6. Ooh I wear asics gel somethingorothers too. I've found them really helpful with my foot issues. If you are having tendon pain, the thing that helps the most is rest. Be suppppppppeeeerr careful with your Achilles, that can get real dangerous real fast :/ Good job on your swim :)!
